University Christmas Party, Fairbanks Style.

Ally the reindeerSo, I went to my first “Chancellor’s Christmas Party” yesterday at UAF. You could get your picture taken with a reindeer! Really. Here ’tis! It was pretty cute. Reindeer are a lot smaller than I thought. They have a Reindeer Research Program and an Agricultural Experimental Research Station that has yaks and reindeer; trying to find new ways to make the frozen tundra productive here has a long history. I’ve read that reindeer were brought here before statehood to breed and create a livestock industry, but it never really took off as either a food or draft beast industry. The party was pretty nice; lots of finger foods ( a lot of them fried) and xmas cookies, some of which I partook of in small amounts. 🙂
